AMS NEVE 1084 MIC PREAMPLIFIER & EQ

Occupying a special place in the imagination of engineers and producers, the 1084 delivers an incredibly fat, smooth sound. While the 1084 builds on the same basic design of the world-famous 1073, it offers a significantly different palette of frequency selections. The 1084 also features a “Q” switch, allowing the user to choose between two different Q types, either narrow or wide with respect to the parametric band. These added features and the 1084’s extended versatility make it a preference over the 1073.The 1084’s three EQ bands provide selectable frequency, with cut and boost capability, and a mid-frequency band which benefits from a High Q Presence switch. The high pass filter can be switched between 45Hz, 70Hz, 160Hz & 360Hz, and the low pass filter between 6kHz, 8kHz, 10kHz, 14kHz, & 18kHz. Both boast 18dB per octave slopes.Handcrafted and completely hand wired in Burnley, UK by Neve’s dedicated professionals, the 1084 reissue has been reproduced to the exact specifications of the original modules.Where innovation has improved on previous technology, Neve has welcomed such improvements. However, not all things lend themselves to enhancement. Example: audio transformers. While other manufacturers use replacements, AMS Neve alone has access to the original hand-wound transformers. This is an important factor when you consider that an analogue preamp is only as good as its transformer. That is why only a Neve sounds like a Neve. All Neve mic preamplifiers are designed to accept signals from a wide range of microphone and line sources. Uncompromisingly low noise and distortion with generous overload performance are noteworthy hallmarks of all Neve products.

JOKAPOIKA SHIRT by MARIMEKKO

In 1953, the very year she joined Marimekko, Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi created Piccolo, a striped fabric pattern painted with vivid brushstrokes. Three years later, the Jokapoika shirt made from the fabric appeared in shops and the streets – for good, it seems. Besides shirts, the Piccolo pattern is also used in cotton purses and a variety of other products.

REGULA CITA III (1956)

The Cita III was the fixed lens version of the IIId. This means it shares a lot of similar functions and the construction of the camera is the same being nearly all metal, the only plastic pieces being trim around windows, the film take up, stuck on leatherette and light meter scale. It has coupled rangefinder and Gossen uncoupled light meter. The meter reads in EV  scale; the lens has EV priority style shutter/aperture system, the aperture does lack the f/22 setting of the IIId though. The rangefinder control is the same as the Cita  camera where the focus ring is mounted behind everything next to the camera body. This makes using it quite awkward as at either end of the focus scale (1m or inf) your fingers tend to block either the viewfinder or rangefinder windows. The view/rangefinder in the Cita III is the same as the IIId with a small circular focus spot and no frame markings.

BEN ROSE HOUSE (1953)

This suburban Chicago home became famous after it appeared in the 1986 movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. In the movie, the 5,300-square-foot house was owned by Ferris Bueller’s friend, Cameron Frye. In a scene from the movie, Frye sends his father’s Ferrari through one of the house’s glass walls and into the woods. It’s the same mid-century Ferrari house that was listed in 2009 for $2.3 million, but now the list price has been reduced to just $1,650,000. Designed by architects A. James Speyer and David Haid, the Ferris Bueller House is an amazing architectural treasure.Physical Address: 370 N Beech St, Highland Park, Illinois, United StatesThe Setting: Earlier, Sudler Sotheby’s International Realtor Meladee Hughes has said that being in this home is like living in a tree house. Located in Highland Park, Illinois, the 5,300 square foot residence offers incredible views of the surrounding woods. The contemporary styled home sits on approximately one acre, and features floor-to-ceiling windows.Interiors & Exteriors:Officially called the Ben Rose Home, it comprises two glass and steel buildings cantilevered over a ravine. The home’s steel and glass pavilion has a wall that shows behind-the-scenes photographs of Alan Ruck and Matthew Broderick from the movie. There are four bedrooms and four bathrooms in the house. The Ferris Bueller House has a 3-car garage, staff quarters and a circular driveway.

LA RÉSERVE DE BEAULIEU & SPA

(‘Tower Room’ From 610 EUR, Three original and unusual rooms situated in La Reserve’s round tower, enjoying a panoramic view over the Mediterranean and the many different trees and shrubs of the hotel garden)

La Reserve de Beaulieu is a legendary destination of charm on the Riviera, an exceptional location in the pure tradition of Mediterranean palazzi…In keeping with Beaulieu-sur-Mer, La Reserve breathes the sweet Mediterranean way of life. It is above all a byword for luxury and relaxation. The hotel staff consists of 130 persons dedicated to the tranquillity and pleasure of the guests.Under the guiding hand of the Delion family, which has owned the premises since 1997, the pink palace has come into its own, embodying the art of the welcome in a spirit which is both luxurious and discreet, in perfect harmony with the unique natural setting. La Reserve was founded in 1880 by Pierre Lottier, a restaurant owner from Nice. It began as a luxury seafood restaurant, and “La Reserve” was the nickname given to the live fish tank which Pierre Lottier had dug out in order to stock the local fishermen’s catch. In 1905, La Reserve de Beaulieu added some ten prestigious rooms reinforcing its status as preferred destination of the world’s aristocracy flocking to the Cote d’Azur.Aristocrats, captains of industry and artists used to meet up at La Reserve : King Gustave V of Sweden, King Leopold II of Belgium, Leo Tolstoy, Sir Thomas Lipton, Gustave Eiffel and Mistinguett to name but a few.The American press magnate and sports lover Gordon Bennett Jr became a great habitué of La Reserve and promoted it in his newspaper, The New York Herald. He gave the palace a unique window on the world by furnishing it with the first telephone number (04 93 01 00 01) and by encouraging road and local transport infrastructures.La Reserve lived through the Belle Epoque, the Great War, the Roaring Twenties…At the end of the Second World War, the new owners built a large Florentine style villa adjoining the restaurant’s veranda.La Reserve’s celebrity guest book from this period and the following years is a compendium of illustrious guests from the fifties and the age of glamour such as Rita Hayworth, Clark Gable, Paul Newman, Charlie Chaplin, or Edith Piaf, Jean Marais, Frank Sinatra…La Reserve de Beaulieu’s current owners are Nicole and Jean-Claude Delion who have vowed to continue the tradition of this palace on the Cote d’Azur

(The Restaurant des Rois)

The jewel in the crown of La Reserve, the gastronomic restaurant was described early on as “the Restaurant of Kings and the King of Restaurants” by a gastronomic critic. The restaurant, which has been regaling the finest palates of the planet since its opening in 1880, has carried on the good work and today, thanks to the efforts of its Chef – Olivier Samson – carries two stars in the Michelin Guide and 17/20 in Gault&Millau guide.

CABARET SHEER MORTICIA CORSET by WHAT KATIE DID

From What Katie Did’s website: “Cut to the same pattern as our ultra-curvy Morticia, the new Cabaret version is made from double-layered, sheer organza fabric, with satin overboning and striking ribbon lacing at the back. Although we have thoroughly road-tested these corsets and confirm their durability, we would still recommend they are kept for very special occasions. The peach version is ideal as a bridal foundation, though the sheer black lends itself spectacularly to burlesque attire. The Cabaret Morticia features gored hips, a longer busk and lower line, allowing for a really extreme waist reduction in those with vintage figures: a 10 inch or greater difference between waist and hip measurements. Many experienced corset wearers will find they take a size smaller than usual in this style, but corset newcomers are often pleasantly surprised with the reduction they can achieve.”

FRANCK BONVILLE “BRUT SELECTION” BLANC DE BLANCS CHAMPAGNE

“Lightly creamy, with pretty violet and smoke notes winding through the biscuit and lemon meringue flavors. This is subtle, featuring well-integrated acidity and a supple structure overall. Easy to like. Drink now. 250 cases imported.” (12/10) This is another terrific bargain, purchased directly from France. All of the fruit comes from the Bonville’s own estate vineyards in the marvelous Grand Cru of Avize. It is all Chardonnay blended from three very good years: 2005 (10%), 2006 (20%) et 2007 (70%). This Champagne has exotic, ripe fruit aromatics and as the glass warms up there are also traces of clean clay and earth, just like in great Chablis! On the palate the Champagne has great fruit and a wonderful full texture. This is a perennial staff favorite, with cases and cases being sold to our own sales team

BLANCANEAUX LODGE (BELIZE)

(Deluxe Cabbana w. Private plunge pool from $448 USD per night)

In the early 1980s, Francis Ford Coppola visited Belize, immediately fell in love with the location, and purchased the abandoned Blancaneaux Lodge. For more than a decade the resort was used as a family retreat before Francis opened his tropical paradise to the public in 1993.Tucked away in a pocket of the Maya Mountains, Blancaneaux Lodge is a 20-room luxury resort where waterfalls tumble into turquoise pools above the jungle canopy. Its remote mountain setting makes it a perfect place to relax, rejuvenate and enjoy life’s simple pleasures.Guests can also explore the ancient civilization of the Maya, which still endures in the sacred sites throughout this magical region. From the ceremonial caves along the white-water rivers of the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve to stalactite caverns and the vast ruins of Caracol deep within the lush rainforest, Blancaneaux is your window into the world of natural and archaeological wonders.

(Deluxe Cabbana w. Private plunge pool from $448 USD per night)

Blancaneaux Lodge is located in the northwest corner of the 107,000-acre Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve in western Belize’s Cayo District. The lodge itself is nestled on the bank of Privassion Creek and is set among tropical pines, oaks, palmetto, craboo and ancient melastome shrubs. Within a couple of miles of the lodge lie the steep limestone hills and valleys of the 13,000-acre Noj Kaax Meen Elijio Panti National Park. The dense jungle, steep ravines, spectacular waterfalls and fast flowing rivers are uninhabited and home to many rare or endangered species of flora and fauna.Beyond the Mountain Pine Ridge lies the vast uninhabited network of 14 protected areas that comprise the 1.2 million acre Maya Mountain Massif.  Less than an hour drive along dirt roads to Guacamallo Bridge, the granite bedrock and red soils of the Mountain Pine Ridge meet the karst limestone and moist tropical broadleaf forests of the 264,000-acre Chiquibul National Park and the Caracol Archaeological Reserve.

SUBU RESTAURANT (BEIJING)

(Designed by Johannes Torpe Studios, well done my friend:-))

Opened in December 2007, within the Season’s Place mall in Beijing, Subu restaurant, work of the non-conformist Danish Designer Johannes Torpe, sets out to offer its customers an experience as close as possible to having lunch on a spaceship.

The setting is not an accidental one. Hosting over 120 shops, including Louis Vuitton and Gucci, the Season’s Place mall is a gateway allowing Occidental luxury to enter China.

Johannes Torpe was inspired by the aesthetics of 1960′s science fiction movies, especially Stanley Kubrick “2001: A Space Odissey”. The name Subu makes one think of an abysmal creature or of a giant shellfish floating through space. From the structural point of view, Subu consists of a large, triangle-shaped room, flanked by cocoon-like booths, closed by glass walls. These are a modern interpretation of the traditional Chinese booths.

BOOK: THE SCULPTURES OF PICASSO

This highly luxurious publication presents the sculptures of Picasso photographed by Brassai, one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century. An authentic text written for this work in 1948 by Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, the former art dealer of Picasso, is also included.Brassai met Picasso in 1932 when he was commissioned to take a series of pictures of the artist s studio and of some plaster sculptures done at Boisgeloup for the review Minotaure. Several years later he was again contacted to photograph Picasso s work for the first book published on the subject of the artist s sculptures. Hence, between 1932 and 1946, Brassai photographed all of Picasso s sculpted works. This long-term working relationship led to a fruitful exchange between the two artists on the respective nature of photography and sculpture, which is reflected in this volume. The Sculptures of Picasso is an atypical vision of lesser known works by Picasso. Indeed, the medium used to depict the sculptures is nearly as unsettling as the objects themselves, and the confusion is emphasized by the contrast between flatness and fullness.

HOUSE IN LEIRIA by MANUEL AIRES MATEUS

Via Archdaily … The functions are banal: a house divided in private area with bedrooms, and social area with living-rooms. The private areas are at street level under the plot, around a central courtyard with rooms opening to private patios in a intimate environment. The living rooms are around a void, that collects light from above and gazes the castle at the city centre.

Unrivalled on road and track, the 2900 B also appeared in Speciale form and was entered for the 1938 Le Mans 24 hours race with a special aerodynamic superlight body also by Touring. Despite the fact that they had outclassed their opponents, drivers Biondetti and Sommer were held up in the closing stages of the race by a blown tyre. Sommer managed to get the car back to the pits and Biondetti took off again. Having managed to put an amazing 160 km between him and his nearest rival, however, a broken valve put him out of the race. He had, though, achieved a fastest lap time of 154.78 km/h.

BAR NUMERO (SÃO PAULO)

(Numero Bar photos from Isay Weinfeld arquiteto)

Numero bar was built on a very narrow and long strip of land in the Jardins area, in São Paulo.A walkway runs from the street through a hallway/tunnel fully covered in mirrors, leading to the main hall.At the Numero bar entrance, the ceiling is extremely low and the view of the hall – cascaded – is unimpeded. Progressing towards the back, the height gradually increases: descending levels feature comfortable lounging areas, under a ceiling that extends on a continually rising surface.

The low and indirect lighting throughout Numero bar lends the ambience a pleasant and cozy atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing drink at the end of the day, accompanied by friends and to the sound of good music.A room reserved for private functions takes up the lower floor of Numero bar and, contrary to the main hall, features a low ceiling all along, with couches placed in the central axis of the room, built-in overhead lighting throughout, and walls completely covered by antique posters or poster fragments.
